Artist Statement:

Shirlee began to explore her artistic talents after retirement (9 years ago).

Her focus is multi-media art, utilizing a process of collaged materials, newspaper, inks /acrylic paints and 3-D sculptures out of recycled materials.

“I’m a self-taught artist; my art is primary composed of acrylic paint & newspapers that I dyed with different inks and paints. It is a process that I’m developing from one art piece to the next. I transposed my sketches onto a canvas, and then create different images by incorporating other materials to create textures and visual effects. I’m exploring other techniques by going “green” using plastics, other reclaimed, reusable and recycle materials.”

“I want my art to convey to the observer that the world is an intriguing and interesting place, hoping my art will give an appreciation for the beauty of all cultures.”

Her artwork has been shown in several art exhibits. Some of her larger Japanese inspired artwork may be seen at Décor-Asian, Eurasian Interiors on 1787 South Broadway in Denver and Pacific Marketplace in Downtown Denver.

Shirlee has demonstrated her unique art techniques in local artist’s workshops.

She has done several workshops for children at the Broomfield Library and the Broomfield Grange for Earth Day events with recycled materials.

Shirlee has donated her artwork to local charities auctions:
‘Go for Broke’, Japanese-American College Scholarship Program
To the Broomfield’s sister-city, Ueda (Japan)
The Humane Society & the Cat Care Society
